Hit and Run

< Previous

The number of hit-and-run accidents in Florida has risen sharply over the past few years to more than double the national average. If only everyone understood Florida hit-and-run laws, perhaps these types of car accidents would decrease.

But why the recent rash of hit-and-run accidents? Perhaps the most controversial issue is the rise of unlicensed and uninsured motor vehicle drivers in Florida. Hit-and-run motorists face not only arrest and/or a hefty citation but also risk losing their jobs, driving privileges and, in some instances, deportation. Other hit-and-run drivers are under the influence of drugs or alcohol. When they realize that being caught with drugs, weapons or other contraband is a guaranteed jail sentence, they flee, figuring they might not get caught. Some car accident analysts and police think our love affair with high performance cars and trying to outrun a red light at the intersection are to blame. Others blame Florida's many wide, high-speed thoroughfares that lead to more serious car collisions and cause more drivers to run.

It is the responsibility of every citizen to report any hit-and-run car accidents they witness. In fact it's the law. Please help your local law enforcement departments, by immediately calling local authorities whenever you see a hit-and-run car accident or have some information about a driver that has left the scene of an accident.
